Planning

Historical Context

The Kansai region is the cradle of Japanese culture. Nara (710-794) and Kyoto (794-1868) served as imperial capitals, leaving behind a legacy of temples, shrines, and traditional arts that define Japan today.

Photography Tips

  • Arrive at Bamboo Grove at sunrise for empty shots
  • Use a fast shutter speed for moving deer
  • Respect 'No Photography' signs inside temple halls
  • Golden hour is best for Fushimi Inari

Insider Tips

  • Get to Fushimi Inari before 8 AM to avoid crowds
  • Buy deer crackers in Nara but hide them quickly
  • Carry a small towel (handkerchief) as some restrooms lack dryers
  • Use a coin locker in Osaka station for luggage if checking out

Our Partners

  • In partnership with Viator, a TripAdvisor company.

Fun Facts

  • There are over 1,000 deer roaming freely in Nara Park.
  • Fushimi Inari Shrine has over 10,000 torii gates.
  • Koyasan is home to a cemetery where companies have gravestones for their employees.
  • Kyoto has 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Cancellation Policy

Most tours offer full refunds if canceled at least 24 hours before the start time. Private and multi-day tours may have stricter policies.

Perfect Day in Kyoto & Nara

We booked the Kyoto and Nara day trip and it was the highlight of our Japan vacation. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and timed everything perfectly so we beat the biggest crowds at the Bamboo Forest. The bus was comfortable and clean.

Great overview, lots of walking

A fantastic way to see the main sights if you are short on time. We visited the Golden Pavilion and Todai-ji in one day. Be prepared to walk a lot! The lunch included was a nice traditional bento box.

Hiroshima trip was moving

The bullet train trip to Hiroshima was seamless. Our guide explained the history with such sensitivity. Miyajima island was beautiful. Highly recommend the private option for a personalized pace.

Koyasan is magical

The journey to Mount Koya was long but worth it. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. The vegetarian monk lunch was delicious and unique. A very spiritual experience.

Efficient and fun

Good value for money. The meeting point in Osaka was easy to find. The deer in Nara were aggressive but fun to feed. I wish we had 30 minutes more at Fushimi Inari, but it's understandable for a group tour.
